Striper Fishing North Georgia

Toccoa River Tailwater Report

The tailwater is finally cooling down, and the fish are getting more active! With stocking slowing significantly during the winter, public areas won’t have as many fish as they do during other seasons. However, float trips are ideal this time of year, as the cooler water allows access to fish that have spread out along the Toccoa. Winter is also one of our favorite seasons for throwing streamers on high water—the big fish are much more willing to bite during the colder months! As always, remember to check the Dam Generation Schedule before heading out to the tailwater.

Small Creeks

The smaller creeks are still fishing well, especially now that recent rain has brought water levels back up. During the winter months, focus on deeper pools, as many fish tend to gather in slower, deeper water.

Upper Toccoa River

The Upper Toccoa has started fishing well with recent rain and the fish have had a good chance to spread out. Our float trips have been doing well on the Upper with some bigger fish in the mix. Always check the water gauge before heading out to the Upper Toccoa, we do not recommend wade fishing the Upper if the water is above 600 cfs.

Lake Trips

Winter is an excellent time to target stripers on the lake with a fly rod! It’s a fantastic opportunity for intermediate to advanced fly anglers to try something new and exciting. Give us a call or shoot us an email to inquire about striper trips.

Flies

We have been having good success with, Size 8-10 Rubber Legs, Size 14-16 Hare’s Ear, Pheasant Tails, Frenchies, and Rainbow Warriors. The further we get into winter make sure you are fishing deep and heavy enough to get to the fish in the slower deeper pools.

If you are interested in a guided trip we would love to show you a great experience on the Toccoa River.

Tight lines and happy fishing!
