Fall Fly Fishing In Blue Ridge, Georgia
When autumn hits Blue Ridge, Georgia, and the temperatures start to cool, the Toccoa River offers a great fly fishing experience. Fall isn’t just for leaf-peeping here—it’s for hooking into some beautiful trout as they take advantage of the Toccoa river’s cooler temperatures. Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or new to the sport, there’s something special about casting a line on the Toccoa as the leaves turn and the air gets crisp. Let’s dive into why fall is one of the best times to fly fish here and what makes Blue Ridge a go-to spot for trout fishing in North Georgia.
Why Fall Fly Fishing on the Toccoa River Is So Unique
Fall brings out some fantastic fishing opportunities along the Toccoa. Cooler water temps mean the trout are more active, feeding throughout the day. Browns start getting ready for their spawn, and the rainbows stay active, too, making for some ideal catch-and-release action. As the brown trout on the Toccoa River get ready for spawn, their color’s become vibrant and it’s one of our favorite times of the year to catch them.
Tips for a Successful Fall Fishing Trip in Blue Ridge
Check Water Levels: The Toccoa River’s flow can vary, especially with seasonal rains. Be sure to check the water levels before heading out, as high water can make wading tricky. Rainfalls vary each year, if we haven’t had much rain through the summer the smaller creeks such as Coopers Creek and Rock Creek can be low so make sure to take a stealthy approach and use smaller tippet. Lower levels can also offer some great fishing opportunities on the Upper Toccoa especially in the Delayed Harvest section which begins November 1st. The DH section on the Toccoa River can be tricky wading when the water is higher so checking flows is always a good idea. We do not recommend wading there if the water is above 600cfs.
If you park at the Sandy Bottoms Day Use area there is a $5.00 daily fee. They will no longer accept cash on site, download the Recreation.gov app before you lose service and then you will scan the QR code at Sandy Bottoms for payment. You can learn more HERE.
Layer Up: While fall days can be warm, mornings and evenings cool off quickly. Dress in layers, and don’t forget a good quality, breathable jacket.
Wade Fishing Vs. Floating In The Fall
Float Trips: The fall is one of our most popular times of the year for float trips. Floating gives you the opportunity to cover a lot more water and target some of the best fishing spots on the Toccoa River. Our float trips not only offer great fishing opportunities, they also get you away from the crowded public access areas.
Wading: can be productive if we have lower water levels, however with the fall being a great time to trout fish in Blue Ridge, the public access areas can be pretty crowded.
